Public Art Projects by Rafala Green

Woven into the creation of all my sculpture, whether it is the result of a solo process in my studio or a community public art project, revolves around the interaction and incorporation of the following common threads: the interplay between opposites- hard/soft, hot/cold, positive/negative, old/new, solid form in the service of the expression of invisible form, the celebration and expression of the power of feminine energy and always the honoring of spirit.

Later in the development of my work as a public artist, I was able to transfer these ideas and concepts to new materials and expand their application in the service of community through a public art project. A project that allowed community participation in the discovery of the power of the creative process as a vehicle for individual and collective empowerment. The Phillips Gateway project exemplifies the purest example of coming together of all these elements. The project began with the vision and spirit of the community looking to the future in hope of a new beginning. Add an artist that hears, feels and sees the dream and the design of the project emerges. From the beginning the creative process of every element of the project is the results of the spirit of a lot of people dedicated to see their unseen dream manifest in physical form for all to see their true power and commitment. It was an honor to be selected as a handmaiden to the process.
